Aerial Yoga at The Kali Collective

In an Aerial Yoga class, we use an Aerial Hammock (or known as silk) suspended from the ceiling to support our bodies during practice. The aerial silk can provide support for some of the more challenging postures, such as inversions and deeper backbends. However, it can also be used for down-regulation and a blissful restorative practice. Although this practice can seem potentially a little overwhelming when you are a total beginner, it is accessible and a great way to step into the unknown and test your boundaries in a safe environment. Classes will also sometimes include pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra.

Let me introduce you to a few benefits of participating in a regular Aerial practice.

  • Increase Range of Motion: The silk acts as a way to deepen into postures, allowing a passive way to increase range of motion.

  • Increased Circulation: We introduce inversion play into practice. As inversions are easier to practice with hammock support, we can work on the endurance of being inverted for a period of minutes, allowing time for circulation to increase.

  • Decompression of the Spine: We allow the spine to decompress and elongate by being upside down. This is a great antidote to our everyday posture!

  • Elevate Mood: Especially in our 'Aerial Play' classes, we encourage that - play! As seriously as we take yoga at The Kali Collective, you can expect to laugh and smile through an Aerial Class.

  • Improve Strength: The beauty of this practice is that it is ideal for all levels. Once you've got the fundamentals down, the practice can become very advanced, requiring a strong core and strong upper body.

  • Down-regulation: Each class will enjoy a lengthy savasana immersed in the silk. This type of savasana is a treat! It can help shift you more into your parasympathetic state of being (rest and digest), leaving you walking away from class and floating.

Here are a few things to be aware of before your first class:

  • Classes run with more of a workshop feel. The teacher will encourage you to speak up, ask questions, and let them know how you feel through your experience. Don't be shy to speak up in an aerial class! Many yoga classes are silent, but this environment is a little different.

  • Loose clothing is encouraged, and you should have your armpits covered. The silk is often placed under the arms in the postures, so to avoid chafing, you want your armpits protected.

  • There are some health contraindications to know of for this practice. Before booking a course or class with us, check out the contraindications list. If in doubt, email us at hello@kalicollective.com so we can best advise you.

  • Jewellery is a no! All jewellery must be removed for the saftey of yourself and the hammocks.

  • We advise you not to eat at least 2 hours prior to class. With the motion of the silk, you want an empty belly.

  • You may feel a little dizzy. This is entirely normal and will usually dissipate through regular practice.
